The American Business Merit Badge

The American Business Merit Badge is an opportunity to learn about the basics of running a business, from start-up operations to managing finances. It is also an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge that will help shape your future career decisions by understanding the complexity of the business world. The badge is awarded by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).


In order to earn the American Business Merit Badge, a Scout must complete the following requirements:

  • Describe the key components of the business cycle.
  • Describe the different types of business organizations.
  • Explain the principles of business management.
  • Explain the importance of customer service.
  • Identify the sources of financing for a business.
  • Explain the difference between profit and non-profit organizations.
  • Explain the importance of ethical practices in business.
  • Describe the legal and regulatory environment for businesses.
  • Explain the importance of marketing and advertising.
  • Explain the basics of financial management.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the global economy.


You must complete the American Business Merit Badge worksheet in order to earn the badge. The worksheet is available for download here.

The worksheet requires you to answer questions and provide examples of various business concepts. You may need to do additional research in order to fully answer these questions. Once you have completed the worksheet, submit it to your Scout leader for review.
