Reading Merit Badge (Worksheet & Requirements)
Earning the reading merit badge can teach Boy Scouts important skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. The badge helps Scouts develop their reading ability, and it also serves as a reminder of the importance of reading and learning.
Requirements for the Reading Merit Badge
To earn the reading merit badge, Scouts must do the following:
- Do two of the following:
- Read a book of at least 100 pages chosen by their counselor.
- Write a one-page book report on a book of at least 100 pages chosen by their counselor.
- Take part in a discussion about a book of at least 100 pages chosen by their counselor.
- Read at least 15 minutes every day for four weeks.
- Do one of the following:
- Read a book or magazine article about a current events topic of interest to you.
- Share a book you have read with someone.
- Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine expressing your opinion on an issue of importance to you.
- Do two of the following:
- Name five books that have had a great influence on you.
- Name five books (novels, biographies, histories, or other nonfiction) and explain why they were interesting and beneficial to you.
- Name five books (fiction or nonfiction) that you think someone in your age group should read and explain why.
- Discuss with your counselor the books you have read and the benefits of reading.
- Explain to your counselor what is meant by “reading between the lines.” Demonstrate this by summarizing a book, article, or story.
Reading Merit Badge Worksheet
The Boy Scouts of America offers an official Reading Merit Badge Worksheet to help Scouts track their progress towards earning the badge.
