Exploration Merit Badge (WORKSHEET & REQUIREMENTS)

Exploration Merit Badge is one of the most rewarding badges a Scout can earn. It offers the opportunity to explore the world around you through observations, research, and hands-on activities. To earn the badge, Scouts must meet certain requirements and complete a worksheet. Here’s what you need to know.

Requirements

  • Visit three different places of interest and prepare a written report on each place.
  • Create a map of the places you visited.
  • Identify and explain five natural features in your area.
  • Identify and explain the importance of five living things in your area.
  • Discuss a career related to exploration.
  • Create an outdoor activity plan for a day trip to a natural area.
  • Take part in a community service project related to exploring.

Worksheet

Scouts must complete the Exploration Merit Badge Worksheet to qualify for the badge. The worksheet includes questions on the places you have visited, the natural features and living things you have observed, and the career you have discussed. Answers must be as detailed as possible.

The worksheet also outlines the outdoor activity plan and community service project. You’ll need to provide clear descriptions of what you’ll do, how you’ll do it, and how it will help you explore your area. The Scoutmaster or adult leader must sign off on each part of the plan.

As you explore, you’ll learn to appreciate nature and practice outdoor skills and leadership. You’ll also discover career opportunities related to exploration and have a chance to give back to your community.
