Nature Merit Badge (WORKSHEET & REQUIREMENTS)

The Nature Merit Badge is a great way to learn more about the natural world. It teaches knowledge of soil, water, plants, and wildlife and promotes appreciation and preservation of the environment. Earning this badge will help Scouts gain a better understanding of the environment and the importance of preserving natural resources.

The Nature Merit Badge consists of the following requirements:

  • Describe the importance and benefits of good stewardship of the environment.
  • Discuss ways to conserve soil, minerals, energy sources, water supplies, forests, air, and wildlife.
  • Explain how the conservation of the environment affects humans and other living things.
  • Do the following:

    • a. Plant one tree, shrub, or other plant and describe its needs for survival.
    • b. Explain the difference between native and invasive species.
    • c. Describe the importance of wildlife and fish management.

  • Identify six species of native plants found in your area and explain their value to wildlife.
  • Describe the importance of wetlands and the effects of their destruction.
  • Tell what you have done to improve the environment.

To help you work toward the Nature Merit Badge, a worksheet has been provided in this document. Once you have completed the worksheet, return your worksheet to your Scout leader or Merit Badge Counselor. Upon completion of all the requirements and the worksheet, you will receive the Nature Merit Badge. Good luck!
