Humankind has evolved in many stages throughout the course of history, taking advantage of new technologies to modify many aspects of everyday life. Much of this evolution is based on four key developments – Agriculture, Industrialization, Urbanization, and Globalization.

So, which development led to the other three? The answer is Agriculture! Agriculture is the oldest and most important development of the four, and the foundation for all of the rest. Without agriculture, society would not have advanced to the point where the other three could occur.

Agriculture was the foundation that allowed societies to settle down in one place. This enabled humans to become more efficient in food production, giving rise to larger and more complex societies. With the development of settlements, trade increased, which then allowed for the growth of economies and the rise of cities. This growth of cities led to the development of industrialization, as cities needed to increase productivity to support their populations.

Industrialization then allowed for the transport of goods and services worldwide, leading to the development of globalization. Globalization enabled the creation of international markets, giving rise to the modern global economy.

Therefore, it is clear that agriculture was the first key development required for the other three. Without it, none of the others would have been possible. Agriculture was and still is the foundation of human development, and will continue to be so for years to come.
