Geology is the study of the earth—the materials of which it is made, the processes that act on them, and the history recorded in the rocks. Earning the Geology merit badge will introduce scouts to the science of geology and they will explore the Earth’s treasures.
Requirements
- Explain to your counselor the hazards that might be encountered in the study of geology, including weather, terrain, and equipment.
- Identify three rock types and describe their characteristics.
- Create a chart or diagram that shows the rock cycle.
- Describe the ways in which surface processes affect the Earth’s surface.
- Name three minerals, their locations, and their uses.
- Perform two chemical tests on minerals.
- Conduct a geological field survey and identify at least five different rock types.
- Explain the role of plate tectonics in the formation of landforms.
- Develop a plan for conserving a natural resource.
